ห้องสมุดสมนึก พูนทรัพย์ เดิมใช้ชื่อว่า ห้องสมุดคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นเริ่มก่อตั้งพร้อมกับคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2523 โดยเริ่มจากห้องสมุดเล็ก ๆ อยู่ในอาคารคณะพยาบาลศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ซึ่งเป็นที่ทำการชั่วคราวของคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ ต่อมาเมื่ออาคารคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของศูนย์วิทยาศาสตร์สุขภาพก่อสร้างเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2528 ห้องสมุดจึงได้ย้ายมาให้บริการที่ชั้นใต้ดินของอาคารทันตแพทยศาสตร์ ในช่วงระยะนี้ห้องสมุดประสบปัญหามากทั้งในด้านการบำรุงรักษาและการบริการ จำนวนบุคลากรที่ประจำในห้องสมุดมีเพียง 1 คน ลักษณะการเรียนการสอนที่ไม่เอื้ออำนวยให้ผู้ใช้บริการมาใช้บริการในเวลาราชการ ทั้งยังไม่สามารถเปิดบริการนอกเวลาราชการได้ เนื่องจากเป็นบริเวณที่ห่างไกลจากการตรวจตรา และสภาพห้องใต้ดินซึ่งน้ำท่วมขัง อากาศอับชื่น  ทำความเสียหายแก่ทรัพย์สินของห้องสมุด  ห้องสมุดจึงได้ย้ายขึ้นมาอาศัยห้องปฏิบัติการโภชนาการของคณะสาธารณสุขศาสตร์ ซึ่งอยู่ชั้นที่สองของอาคารเดียวกันกระนั้นปัญหาของห้องสมุดก็มิได้หมดไปเนื่องจากสถานที่ซึ่งออกแบบสำหรับเป็นห้องปฏิบัติการมีเครื่องมือ เครื่องใช้ เช่น  โต๊ะปฏิบัติการ ระบบส่งแก๊ส น้ำ ไฟ กระจายอยู่ทั่วไป เป็นอุปสรรคต่อการควบคุม ดูแล และขยายตัวของห้องสมุดอย่างยิ่ง

พ.ศ. 2530 มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น มีแนวคิดในการบริหารห้องสมุดในระบบศูนย์รวม โดยมีสำนักวิทยบริการเป็นศูนย์กลางมีการโอนอัตรากำลังและการจัดสรรงบประมาณของห้องสมุดทั้งหมดไปรวมที่สำนักวิทยบริการและมีโครงการที่จะรวมสถานที่ทำการห้องสมุด ซึ่งยังกระจายให้บริการอยู่ตามคณะต่าง ๆ เข้าด้วยกันให้เหลือเพียง 3 แห่งแห่งละกลุ่มสาขาวิชาในช่วงแผนพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติ ระยะที่ 7 ถึงอย่างไรก็ตามคณบดีคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ในขณะนั้น คือ รองศาสตราจารย์ทันตแพทย์สมนึก พูนทรัพย์ก็มิได้ทอดทิ้ง  ได้จัดสรรเนื้อที่ 300 ตารางเมตรทางปีกตะวันตก ชั้น 5 ของอาคารมหิตลานุสรณ์ให้เป็นที่ทำการแห่งใหม่ พร้อมทั้งอนุมัติเงินของคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์จำนวนหนึ่งจัดซื้อโสตทัศนูปกรณ์เพื่อให้บริการในห้องสมุดด้วย  ห้องสมุดเริ่มให้บริการ ณ ที่ทำการใหม่อาคารมหิตลานุสรณ์ เมื่อ 18  กรกฎาคม2533 เป็นต้น

At first Somnuk Poonspaya Library was named the Faculty of Dentistry Library, Khon Kaen University. It was founded together with Faculty of Dentistry, Khon Kaen University in 1980 by starting from a small library in the building of Faculty of Nursing, Khon Kaen University which was a temporary office of Faculty of Dentistry.

When the Building of Faculty of Dentistry, which was a part of the Health Sciences Center, built in 1985, and the library was moved to the ground floor of this Building. At that time the library had many problems, includings the maintenance and the service. There was only one person working permanently in the library. Since the characteristics of learning/teaching did not provide the users to use the library in official time, the library could not open part-time. Furthermore, the library was in the area that was far from checking, and the basement was flooded and damp. It caused damage to the property of the library. Therefore the library had moved to the Nutritional Laboratory of the Faculty of Public Health that was n the 2nd floor of the same building. However, the library still had some problems because this place was designed for the laboratory and there were many apparatuses and equipments such as the operation table, the gas system, the water and the fire that were around the room. So it was a burden to control, monitor and extend the library very much.

In 1987, Khon Kaen University had some concepts to administer the libraries in centralized system through the Information Resources Center by transferring the staffs and budget allocation of all the libraries in Khon Kaen University to gather at the Information Resources Center. Besides, there was a project to assemble the library offices that were located at various faculties and reduce only 3 offices in each field following the Seventh National Economic and Social Development Plan.

However, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at that time, Associate Professor Somnuk Poonsapaya had not neglected, he allocated the area of 300 square metres on the 5th floor, west wing of Mahitalanusorn Building to be the new library office. In addition, he allowed the money of the Faculty of Dentistry to buy the audiovisual materials to service in the library too.

The library began to service at the new office, Mahitalanusorn Building, since July 18, 1990 and it was renamed “Somnuk Poonsapaya Library” to be the memory of Associate Professor Somnuk Poonsapaya, the second Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, who died in 1989. While he was in the position as Dean of the Faculty, he sacrificed his happiness and made great progress to the Faculty of Dentistry, Khon Kaen University.

Somnuk Poonsapaya Library is responsible for acquiring, collecting dental information resources, academic servicing and retrieving information electronically. It will be the source of studying, supporting all aspects of learning / teaching, and researching of the Faculty of Dentistry in order to generate efficiently, conveniently and quickly.
